I refuse to claim to be a huge thoroughbred racing fanatic. While I'm a horse enthusiast, racing is an entirely different ballgame. However, in the little bit that I have followed, the name D. Wayne Lukas stands out in my mind. For those of you who have never heard of Lukas, he is a long-standing trainer in the thoroughbred world with numerous big winners and numerous big names in racing.

Well this Saturday, Lukas will be honored in relation to the Travers Stakes here in Saratoga. Back in January, he received the Eclipse Award of Merit for a lifetime of outstanding achievement in regards to thoroughbred racing—another prestigious award to add to his Hall of Fame status and millions of dollars he has won racing thoroughbreds.

Lukas has won the Travers three times in his career, including back in 2013 with a horse by the name of Will Take Charge. He has enjoyed numerous wins at Saratoga Race Course and says that it is one of his favorite racetracks.

“I think the atmosphere, you can't bottle this and capture it at any other place. All the other tracks seem to try. But nowhere can you get that picnic area and the people, all the young people, children, everybody. You just don't see it any other place," he said.

On Thursday, (tomorrow) Lukas will be honored during the 14th Annual Travers Celebration. This prestige means he will receive a red blazer, one of NYRA's newest traditions. He will be honored along with fellow trainer Alan Jerkens and legendary announcer Tom Durkin.
