Did You Know There Was a Fort in Downtown Albany Once?
Me either - but new research pinpoints exactly where 'Fort Nassau' was located.
According to the New York History Blog, Fort Nassau, which was built in 1614 and had been North America’s oldest Dutch trading house. According to recent research, turns out the fort was located where the Kenwood Rail Yard now stand sin the Port of Albany.
So then... what knocked down the fort? Several smaller floodings from the Hudson River, and one massive flood took down the fort in 1617. The Dutch then moved on to build Fort Orange (that then burnt down in 1848) also in Albany.
Pretty cool, huh?
